Spring latch does work, but I am slightly disappointed in the quality of the metal. My neighbor has an antique one on a gate that is over 100 years old and still fully operational today. These new spring latches are made from metal that is too pliable. After a dozen or so closes, the latch has self bent back so close to the gate at no longer catches on the stop on the opposite post. In order for it to work again, you have to bend the spring latch back out. There’s no telling how many times I will have to do this and how long it will last before it finally just breaks. Bottom line is, it is a simple strip of metal. There’s no reason why it couldn’t be built with stronger steel. I mean how much more could that have cost, $1 maybe $2 dollars. I will use this until I come across an original from an antique shop somewhere.

The posts for my walk gate were set too close, or moved over the years, so the gate was too close to the post for the U-latch. I rotated the latch, etc. but was never happy with it. Then remembered seeing these as a kid. Found one here and it works like a charm with the 2 3/8" POST KEEPER. Now my gate is in line with the fence, and the latch works great. Not sure it would withstand a large dog jumping against it, but for a walking gate, it's perfect.

The product quality does not look anything like the picture. In fact the latch had a couple of sharp burrs on the surface that could easily cut or scrap someone during use. The weld for the two cross pieces was of poor quality and seperation could already be seen during installation. I do not anticipate that this latch will last for a fraction of time, compared to the high quality of the one it replaced.
